How to Search
To find an image on Picsearch, simply enter the words that best
describe what you are looking for in the search field on the top of
any Picsearch page and press enter. The result will be immediately
visible in your web browser. Click on a thumbnail to see more information about an image. The best matching images, together with associated
information, will be shown first in your web browser.
Browsing Through the Results
Picsearch always presents the most relevant images first with their associated information.
Only rarely will all of the results be displayed on one page because each search query will match so many images. For easy access to the other result pages Picsearch provides a navigation bar below the currently displayed result set.
Increasing the Accuracy of the Search Results
Being more specific when describing the images you seek can yield better results. For example, if you were looking for images of eagles you could search for eagle. Should you, however, be especially interested in images of bald eagles then a much more precise search result would be achieved by using the search query Bald Eagle instead.
Using "+" and "-" Signs
By default Picsearch presents images which best match your query words. Sometimes you may want the presented images to match an additional keyword. This is done by adding the "+" operator immediately in front of the desired keyword. Sometimes you may want to filter out some specific keywords to achieve a better search result. This is done by including a "-" operator or typing immediately in front of undesired keywords. Example: if you are searching for a Map of London but not of The London Underground you could use the search query Map of London -Underground.
Increasing the Number of Images in the Search Results
If a user wants images of cars in general, a common mistake is for him or her to search for Cars (plural). An image with only a single car will not necessarily be associated with the keyword Cars but rather with Car. A better search result could therefore be achieved by searching for Car (singular). Conversely, if you are not satisfied with the results, try searching for the same keyword in another form, i.e. if Duck yielded undesirable results try searching for Ducks.
Looking for Animations?
Both images and animations are searched for by default. If you only want to search for animations, tick the Only Animations alternative. If you only want to search for images, tick the Only Images alternative.
Specifying Color
Picsearch searches by default for both color and black&white images. If one option is not desired, simply alter the settings in the color selection.
Specifying the Size of the Images
The size of the images that you want can be specified in ranges through the drop-down list interface. The default value is set to Any Size. The different sizes correspond to the following number of pixels horizontally:
| Wallpaper | Desktop resolutions | ||
| Very Small | 1 to 50 pixels | ||
| Small to Medium | 50 to 400 pixels | ||
| Medium to Large | 200 to 800 pixels | ||
| Medium to Very Large | 200 pixels or more | ||
| Large to Very Large | 400 pixels or more | ||
| Very Large | 800 pixels or more | ||
| Any Size | 1 pixel or more |
